DESPITE the global economic downturn that has resulted in job losses countrywide, a new Wimpy fast-food outlet opened its doors at the mining town of Rosh Pinah in the South last week.
The outlet has created 19 immediate jobs, but the workforce is expected to increase to 30.
Speaking at the opening, the Regional Councillor for Oranjemund Constituency, Toivo Nambala, said a strategy has been developed to ensure the future existence of the fast-growing town if mining activities come to a halt.
‘Around the world when a town develops around mining activity, such towns often cease to exist when mining activity stops,’ he said.
‘One must remember that land-based mining is finite – once minerals have been depleted and all that there is to be mined has been extracted from the ground, then mining ceases,’ he added.
Nambala said economic injections such as the new Wimpy will provide a new stream of business for other enterprises, including local supermarkets and clothing retailers.
‘So the impact that this new Wimpy is going to have is impressive all round,’ he remarked.
Nampala complimented the owners of the new outlet on their ‘bold business initiative’.
He also thanked the Skorpion Zinc Mine and Rosh Pinah Corporation for supporting local business developments.
