Romeo Schiefer without lawyer

THE defence lawyer who has been representing youthful double murder suspect Romeo Schiefer announced his withdrawal from Schiefer’s case in the High Court on Thursday.

Defence counsel Jan Wessels told Judge President Petrus Damaseb during a pre-trial court appearance by Schiefer that he had instructions to withdraw as Schiefer’s legal representative. The Directorate of Legal Aid would now have to instruct another lawyer to represent Schiefer, Wessels said.As a result of this development, Schiefer (20) will have to make another pre-trial appearance in the High Court on June 18 to see if his legal representation has been sorted out.He is accused of murdering his parents, Frans and Francina Schiefer, both 50 years old, in their home in Khomasdal on the evening of January 18 last year.Schiefer has pleaded not guilty to the charges in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court.Wessels has previously indicated that Schiefer would deny that he was at the murder scene when his parents were shot dead, and that he would also dispute the admissibility of an alleged confession that he is claimed to have made after his arrest. He remains in custody.werner@namibian.com.na
