Rehoboth mayor fined for negligence

REHOBOTH mayor Bartholomeus Pieters on Friday received a fine of N$1 000 after he was found driving his official vehicle with an expired licence disc.

The fine will be reduced to N$500 if and when he shows the police proof of his disc renewal.The mayor was issued fined at the Mariental roadblock whilst driving from Rehoboth to Mariental.His licence disc shows that it expired on May 31 2011, and he was supposed to renew or buy a new disc within 21 days from the day that it expired, something which he had failed to do for almost two months.The traffic officers at the roadblock did not ask the mayor why he did not renew his car licence disc for such a long time. Five more drivers were also issued similar fines of N$1 000 for driving vehicles with expired licence discs, while three drivers were fined N$2 000 for overloading their vehicles with passengers. Other fines issued on the day were for people driving without drivers’ licences, defective brakes, driving vehicles without number plates fixed, worn tyres and failing to convey passengers in good compartments. At the end of the four-hour operation, a total of 15 drivers were fined, with fines ranging from N$500 to N$2 000. – Nampa
