REHO Falcons won the Rehoboth derby to capture the Tommy Jarman Trophy for the third time in four years in the Namibia Rugby Premier League.
Falcons recaptured the trophy, previously won in 2007 and 2008, from Rehoboth who won it for the first time last year. This time around, the boot of Luwayne Kotze and a solitary try by Howard Titus were the undoing of Rehoboth as Falcons racked up 22 to 7 points.’We now will have to go back to the field and start again, this is not the end of the season,’ the coach of Rehoboth, David Abrahams said after the game. ‘We still plan to finish on top of the log and win the league title again, we have enough games left in the season. Nothing is done and dusted yet,’ he added.’From now on we just have to focus on winning the league and I know we can do it,’ Abrahams continued. The result leaves Rehoboth still on top of the league with 25 points after five wins in eight matches. Falcons on the other hand move up from fourth position on the log to second with 24 points after they winning four of their matches so far. In the other derby United won their third match of the season after they beat long time rivals, Wanderers 20-12. United were the first to show their intention when they had a try by Riaan Coetzee disallowed by the referee as a result of an earlier forward pass.Soon after, scrumhalf Peter Rossouw of Wanderers made it past the United defence to score the first points of the match. Herman Botma failed to kick between the posts to deny his team the extra two points. In the 30th minute, centre Robert Dickson scored a try for United that was converted by Winmar Rust to put United in the lead by two points. Just before halftime, Rust kicked in a penalty that brought the score to 10-5, in favour of United at the break. In the 47th minute United were awarded another penalty that was kicked in again by Rust to bring the score to 13-5. Ian Nel scored a try for United at 60 minutes that was converted by Rust to make the score 20-5. Wanderers managed to score a try through Wilco Schoeman with ten minutes remaining in the match. The conversion came from Botma’s boot to bring the final score to 20-12.Hannes Brits, the manager of United was happy with the result and was confident of his team finishing in the top four.’We started off the season on the wrong foot because some of our seasoned players retired. We managed to sign a couple of young players and are still building the team,’ Brits said.’From here on, things will get better for us, we signed Mahco (Prinsloo) and he is very important to the team because he brings lots of experience with him,’ he added.’With the way we are playing we should be able to finish third or fourth. Rehoboth last year qualified fourth to the playoffs and ended up winning the league, and I’m sure we can do the same,’ Brits continued.United stay sixth on the log while Wanderers drop from third to fifth. In other matches played, Unam lost at home to Western Suburbs 35-17. This result means that Suburbs move up from fifth to third on the log while Unam move to the bottom of the log. Former log leaders, Mariental lost to Kudus 45-17. Kudus as a result move up one place from the bottom of the log to seventh and Mariental drop from second to fourth.- namibiasport.com.na
