Records fall at National Swimming Championships

Records continued to fall at the National Swimming Championships on Saturday as Christine Briedenhann of Namib Swimming Academy joined the two record breakers of Friday – Kiah Borg and Zanri Oberholzer, also of NSA, – on the record breaking path.

After breaking the Women’s 13-14 year 200m breaststroke record on Friday, Kiah Borg continued her great form with two more records in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events. In the 50m breaststroke she broke her own record of 36,20 seconds with a new time of 35,97 seconds. In the afternoon session Borg again flashed through the water to break her own 100m breaststroke record of 1:19:49 with a new time of 1:18,52.Zanré Oberholzer left the rest of the swimmers in her wake during the 200m Backstroke event and took nearly two seconds off her own 200m backstroke record with a new record time of 2:25, 85. This is both an 13-14 Age Group record and an Open Record. Christine Briedenhann then arrived in the 100m Butterfly and bettered her sister Jonay’s record of 1:07,81 with a new time of 1:06,53.The 400m Medley Open Relay was the stage, and Zanre Oberholzer, Daniela Lindemeier, Kiara Schatz and Christine Briedenhann of NSA were the actors when they combined to break the 1980 record by six seconds, with a time of 4:39.62.The 9-10 Women’s Relay team from Dolphins also clocked a fantastic time to record a NASU record with a time of 2:23,88, a full four seconds faster than the old record. The Dolphins team consisted of Heleni Stergiadis, Vicky Botha, Joanne Liebenberg and Carissa Esslinger. On Friday, Borg and Oberholzer recorded the first records of the 2012 National Swimming Championships during the second session.Despite difficult conditions that included lightning and rain, they both set new records in the Women’s 13-14 year age group category. First up it was Kiah Borg who managed to eclipse Daniela Lindemeier’s old mark of 2:51,06 with a new record time of 2:51,01 in the 200m breaststroke event.Oberholzer then continued her dominance in the backstroke discipline to better her own record of 1:08,67 with a new time of 1:08,32.The National Swimming Championships continued with the final session yesterday. The Namibia Swimming Union meanwhile managed to install and operate its new Swimming Timing System on Saturday for the first time and expressed its gratitude to the City of Windhoek who made the investment in the development of swimming in Namibia.
