WITH regard to road accidents which have claimed many lives on our national roads, I would like to make something clear, which I believe is quite misleading concerning the cause of road accidents.
I am sick and tired of some people claiming that road accidents are caused by drivers who don’t own licences or by incompetent drivers. To suggest that is nonsense and misleading. How can anyone without a driving licence take a fat chance like that when roadblocks are all over during the festive season? Who would risk it?Come on, that doesn’t make much sense at all. And are all previous and current road accident statistics suggesting and proving that these deadly road accidents we experience were caused by illegal drivers who don’t own driving licences or by legal drivers who had recently acquired their driving licences? Those who think and say that road accidents are caused by these drivers are using it as a scapegoat for the real reasons at hand. The problem also doesn’t lie with NaTIS (Namibia Traffic Information System) being too lenient when it comes to testing drivers who wish to acquire licences.Road accidents in most cases are caused by very competent and experienced drivers. The problem is simply that some of us ignore road signs and traffic rules and regulations. People speed as fast as they want when the coast is clear. They also overtake dangerously when it suits them because they think they are pros at driving and would never cause an accident. So, please let us respect traffic signs, traffic rules and regulations and just drive carefully every time we get behind the wheel.Vante MajikaBy e-mail
