THE RDP youth league has called on Namibian youth not to be fazed by acts of political intimidation, and to get registered and head to the polls come November.
During a visit to The Namibian, RDP Youth League Secretary, Malumbano Sibuku and his Deputy, Sam Hamunyela, said they are concerned that ‘the youth are wary of voting and don’t even want to register because of intimidation’.They said the levels of bullying and violence at the Omuthiya, Eenhana and Tobias Hainyeko constituency elections had deterred the youth from exercising their right to vote, but added that ‘the history of intimidation in politics has gone’.Highlighting education and training, unemployment, migration and health as major challenges that the RDP youth league sees as hampering youth development, Sibuku and Hamunyela, both teachers, said: ‘We would therefore love to see them [the youth] in big numbers in all 13 regions registering to become eligible voters, so that they can participate in decision-making in one way or another … and so that their dreams can become a reality.’The youth leaders also pressed for debate among the different political parties on the topic of youth and other issues. ‘In RDP, we invite open debate and believe that it is only debate that can help us to reach the targeted goals,’ said Sibuku.nangula@namibian.com.na
