Rape, murder suspect in Lüderitz court

A 24-year-old man appeared in the Lüderitz Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with the alleged murder of a resident of the coastal town, Gerome Helgrain (41), last week.

Jared Munjanu, who was arrested on Friday, appeared in court before assistant magistrate Linda Nakale. His case was postponed to 20 October for formal bail and legal aid applications.

Munjanu is being held in custody in the meantime.

The police have reported that Helgrain was stabbed more than 40 times with a sharp object, and was robbed of his cellphone and 43-inch (109cm) television set.

Helgrain, who was found dead in his house, also appeared to have been raped, the police have stated.

//Kharas police commander Marius Katamila over the weekend said a concerned member of the public reported to the police that Helgrain, who lived alone, had last been seen on Saturday night last weekend, and that his house was locked with the key not being inside the lock.

Helgrain was found with multiple stab wounds where he lay on the floor next to his bed in the house, after the door to the house had been broken open.
