RAMBLERS Football Club won the four-team tournament held at the SKW stadium over the weekend.
The Pionierspark outfit showed good early-season nerve as they recorded victories in both their matches against Tigers and hosts SKW through penalty shootouts.
On Friday, SKW beat Civics 3-1 in the first match of the tournament, with Ramblers edging Tigers 3-0 on penalties following a one-all draw after 90 minutes.Tigers made up for their poor showing in the shootout by hammering Civics 5-1 in the losers’ section match on Saturday. SKW threw away a two-goal advantage to allow Ramblers back into the match and ultimately paid the price during the penalty shootout. Ramblers once again demonstrated their clinical spot-kick-taking abilities as they netted all five of their allotted kicks to SKW’s four. Although it was only a pre-season contest, Civics would need to drastically improve before the league gets underway this weekend. SKW, who struggled for goals last season, may have unearthed a genuine goal-getter in the gangly Robby Eschelmeyer. The new recruit from TSV Kleinburgwedel in German football’s fifth tier netted one and showed promising glimpses of his ability as a frontman during the tournament. Tigers looked good in possession but rarely threatened their opponents. If they can turn their dominance into goals then they could be in for another good run in the league. The two wins should give Ramblers much-needed confidence for the new season. This will go a long way in helping the club steer clear of the relegation zone this time around.
