A GROUP by the name of Greenstone Resorts wants to build a regional shopping mall and other mixed use buildings at Walvis Bay’s old sewerage discharge area.
Although the development is considered by the Walvis Bay municipal council as a ‘welcome injection’ into the town’s economy, there are reservations regarding the suitability of the area, being so close to the sewerage treatment works.’The ensuing odours cannot always be controlled to the satisfaction of erven in close proximity,’ a comment by the town’s management committee read. The council, which approved the idea in principle, said it would not be held liable to sell to the applicant the required piece of land situated at the historical sewerage site due to circumstances ‘beyond council’s control’ – including the effect of the odours.
