Policewomen sent to Darfur

THE first contingent of female Namibian Police officers is being deployed to the United Nations and African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur, Sudan.

The initial number of female officers requested for this mission was 76 but only 31 could be deployed because the others did not meet the requirements. The first group of 17 is leaving today while the rest will be deployed on March 30.The mission lasts a year with the possibility of extension. Namibia currently has troops in Libya, Sudan and East Timor. Their task is to support the international community’s effort of creating global peace, stability and economic development. ‘It is also realised that significant female presence in a peacekeeping operation has a greater impact towards peace achievement. Hence, contributing countries are encouraged to send more female officers for deployment,’ said Deputy Commissioner Traugott Nghambe at the send-off ceremony.
