Police officers face murder charges

FIVE Keetmanshoop Police officers and their station commander face prosecution in connection with the death of Noel Thompson, who died shortly after his release from Police custody on April 1 2007.

The Prosecutor General has decided to prosecute them on a murder charge, The Namibian was reliably informed.The Police officers are set to make their first court appearance in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. Charles Vries, who had been charged with murder in connection with Thompson’s death too, will join the Police officers in the dock tomorrow. Vries, an ex-detainee who shared a cell with Thompson, allegedly beat Thompson to death during a fight in the holding cell. Thomson died six hours after his arrest on a domestic violence charge. A post-mortem report The Namibian has seen indicated that Thompson suffered seven fractured ribs, a ruptured liver and multiple bruises to his head. At the time of Thompson’s death, his family accused the Police of beating his brother to death – a claim rejected by the Karas Police Chief, Deputy Commissioner Josephat Abel.
