PRESIDENT Hifikepunye Pohamba will deliver his annual State of the Nation address in the National Assembly this afternoon.
It is expected that the Head of State will speak about the effects of the global recession on the Namibian economy. The Weatherly copper mine at Tsumeb closed four months ago, laying off 630 workers. Namibia’s largest diamond-mining company, Namdeb, stopped mining operations this month until the end of June, while 1 500 of its nearly 3 000 workforce accepted voluntary retrenchment.The State of the Nation address is delivered every year after the conclusion of the Budget debate in the National Assembly.
