Players in US hockey feast

THE Suzelle and Janine Davin Sport Trust has to date given financial assistance to individual sports candidates in golf, swimming, athletics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, marathon and gymnastics.

The trustees decided to look into how to assist the best junior team players in their different sport codes and have decided to look for opportunities for these players.Such an opportunity came up for hockey players with the relationship built between Munya Maraire from World Wide Scholarships in Harare and the Trust. Munya was a friend of the late Suzelle and Janine Davin and with this background he decided to work closer with the Trust to the benefit of Namibian junior hockey players. World Wide Scholarships in Harare is sending an African junior hockey team to participate in the annual USA National Field Hockey Festival in California.The Trust negotiated with WWS to include two top Namibian girl hockey players in this team, namely Marsha Venter (17) and Annalien Davin (16). The Trust will sponsor the expenses of Marsha Venter and Annalien Davin will be sponsored by her own family, as it is the mission of the trust not to help family members of the Trustees. Both these players have excellent curriculum vitae and will be an asset for the WWS African Team.Marsha Venter and Annalien Davin have both represented Namibia at under-18, under-21 and senior level. The Trust decided to make this an annual opportunity for Namibian Junior Hockey Players by sponsoring the top girl and top boy hockey player to participate in the WWS African team in the USA. This is regarded as something special for Namibian boys’ and girls’ hockey players to motivate them to lift their standard of play and strive towards excellence. The long-term idea is to give Namibian hockey players the opportunity to participate in international events where American university coaches can see them in action and possibly offer them hockey bursaries to further their studies and hockey careers in the USA.The Janine & Suzelle Davin Sport Trust website is now up and running – please go to www.davin-trust.org for more information on trust events and beneficiary details.
