FOR 83 children from the Mix Camp informal settlement in the Brakwater area today is a red-letter day, as they to can go to a brand new kindergarten.
The Tkaweni Inges Kindergarten was completed last year and opens today with the rest of the schools, crèches and kindergartens in the country.
Although the kindergarten has been in existence since the year 2000, this is the first time that it has two classrooms, a toilet and a proper playground. The kindergarten was donated by Inge Boch, who lives on a plot in the Brakwater area.
About 4 500 people live at Mix Camp and there are no schools for the many children.
‘We have a lot of children here who do not attend school as the parents are too poor to send them to Windhoek and to a hostel,’ says Franziska //Garoës, who started the kindergarten.
The children who attended the kindergarten last year, and should be going to Grade One this year, say they will be staying home.
