A FUN day was held at Oshakati on Saturday as part of the annual Olympic Day commemorations.
The event was organised by the Olympic Committee of Namibia together with the Northern Regional Olympic Committee and the local Officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sport.Namibia National Olympic Committee member Ndeulipulwa Hamutumwa, on behalf of International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, said each year the world celebrates the birth of the modern Olympic Movement on this day. The day, he said, is for people from all walks of life and is about much more than just sport. It is a special day to reflect on the meaning of sport and its values.The mayor of Oshakati, Ben Kathindi, whose speech was read by the municipality’s public relations officer Jackson Muma, thanked the Namibia Olympic Committee for having included Oshakati for the first time in the Olympic day.The day was also celebrated at Okahandja, Omaruru, Keetmanshoop and Tsumeb. Kathindi said the organisation brought many people, especially children from different schools, together to celebrate the day.He said that Oshakati is not only the commercial centre of the north, but will soon also become a sport centre of excellence where a conducive environment will be created to enable talents to be identified and nurtured for regional and international competition.The participating children ran a kilometre through Oshakati West and received certificates of attendance. Hamutumwa and other members of the committee planted trees as a sign of protecting the environment so that athletes can compete in pleasant environments.
