ABUJA – Nigerian government departments used only an average 54 per cent of the budget allocations they received for capital spending in 2009, Finance Minister Mansur Muhtar said yesterday.
He said that while a few departments were able to achieve high rates ‘many more were unable to effectively utilise the financial resources placed at their disposal to deliver on the priorities of the government’. Muhtar told reporters on the sidelines of a workshop on improving delivery that the picture was slightly better if money released under a supplementary budget was included, increasing the rate of implementation to about 60 per cent.If approved as is, Nigeria’s 2010 budget will be even bigger than last year’s at around US$$27 billion.- Nampa-Reuters
