Ongwediva hosts annual northern schools tourney

OTB Sport will once again host the Best of Schools Tournament in Ongwediva on July 9 and 10.

The tournament will consist of football, netball, basketball and volleyball for both girls and boys. The tournament is open to all schools in northern Namibia and every school is encouraged to send their best team irrespective of age. Last year the tournament had more than 1 000 enthusiastic participants. The best football team of the day will win a trophy, medals, Puma soccer kit and four Puma Fifa-inspected balls as well as some OTB sport vouchers. The winners in the other sport codes will all receive trophies and medals as well as OTB sport vouchers which they can use to buy sport equipment for their school at OTB Sport.Organiser Penny Shaalulange of OTB Sport said the mission of the tournament is to grow sport at grassroots level countrywide.’We realised that sport in Oshakati and its surrounds is still in its infancy and so we help to expand sport in that region,’ Shaalulange said. ‘We work together with some excellent coaches who will assist us as match officials.’ The organisers said they have arranged accommodation at one of the schools for participants who need accommodation. ‘We were complimented with our strict adherence to the timetable and the great prizes we handed out. This year we hope to keep it up at that level,’ said Shaalulange. According to Shaalulange the annual Best of Schools tournament is not prone to age cheating. ‘There is no age category,’ she said. ‘We only get the best teams from the various schools so a team can have players of all ages. The only requirement is that they are learners from the school that they represent.’Interested schools should contact Penny Shaalulange at 065 224 501 or Fax 065 224 506. Waga Waga, a new fashion store in Oshakati and a subsection of OTB Sport, is the official brand sponsor of the tournament,
