Omusati police commander seeks community help for station opening

Omusati police regional commander Ismael Basson.

Omusati police commander commissioner Ismael Basson has asked regional business people to make donations toward the inauguration of a new police station.

According to a letter he wrote to various businesses, the Onheleiwa Police Station will be inaugurated by police inspector general Joseph Shikongo on 21 January.

“The global economic crisis became a factor of concern within Namibia, whereby the Namibian Police, which is a non-profit organisation, is no exception. In view of the above, we hereby request your esteemed business/institution to donate in kind, any type of donation that may assist the police in the successful inauguration of these facilities,” Basson said.

Speaking to The Namibian yesterday, Basson said his office had not received a single donation after the letter was written on 2 January.

He highlighted that those who donate will not be favoured or given preferential treatment.

In recent years, civilians, business owners and government institutions have been donating to the Namibian Police, particularly in the Oshana region.

For example, last year, a group of Ondangwa youth repaired a police vehicle at the cost of N$18 000. In 2023, two brothers donated car parts allegedly worth N$13 000 to the Oshana police commander.

In addition, last month, the Bank of Namibia handed over gym equipment worth over N$300 000 to the police in the Oshana region.
