Omina Supplies renewed its sponsorship of hockey in Namibia yesterday when they announced a N$25 000 sponsorship for the 2008 Indoor Season.
At the same occasion which took place at the Namibia Sport Commission’s headquarters, trophies were also awarded to the various league winners of last year’s field hockey league. Last year, Unam won the men’s Premier League for the seventh time over the past eight years, while Windhoek Old Boys (WOB) came second and DTS third.WOB won the women’s Premier league, followed by DTS and Wanderers. The men’s Reserve League was won by WOB, followed by DTS and DTS Draughters, while WOB won the women’s Reserve League, followed by Wanderers and DTS.Omina Supplies first started sponsoring hockey in Namibia last year, when they donated N$30 000 towards the field league, while they also donated N$8 000 towards hockey development. The managing director of Omina Supplies, Peter Davidson, himself a former player and past president of the Namibia Hockey Union, said he was proud to be able to contribute to the development of hockey in Namibia.”Hockey is a big family sport in Namibia and we have players from the age of eight through to 50 playing the game.We want to contribute towards community development and involve more players from disadvantaged communities, so that they can get a better life through hockey,” he said.Randy Slabbert of the NHU said that Omina Supplies’ sponsorship last year had led to the improvement of the game.”After Omina Supplies came on board for the first time in 2007, we could pay our umpires for the firsttime. This led to a more consistent all-round performance by our umpires, which raised the standard of the game.Omina Supplies also contributed towards our development programme in Katutura and Khomasdal which has produced some of our top players like Siabonga Martins and Heini Swartbooi,” he added.Walter Haseb of the NSC congratulated Omina Supplies for their investment, saying that it was crucial for the development of the game.”Investment in sport cannot be overemphasised, because without it we cannot expect to win any medals on the international stage.Companies such as Omina Supplies should be applauded because they do so out of their love for the sport,” he said.Namibia SportLast year, Unam won the men’s Premier League for the seventh time over the past eight years, while Windhoek Old Boys (WOB) came second and DTS third.WOB won the women’s Premier league, followed by DTS and Wanderers. This led to a more consistent all-round performance by our umpires, which raised the standard of the game.Omina Supplies also contributed towards our development programme in Katutura and Khomasdal which has produced some of our top players like Siabonga Martins and Heini Swartbooi,” he added.Walter Haseb of the NSC congratulated Omina Supplies for their investment, saying that it was crucial for the development of the game.”Investment in sport cannot be overemphasised, because without it we cannot expect to win any medals on the international stage.Companies such as Omina Supplies should be applauded because they do so out of their love for the sport,” he said.Namibia Sport
