Olivier’s run comes to an end

Carel ‘Poena’ Olivier’s run at the World Bowls Indoor Championships in Australia came to an end on Thursday when bowed out in the last 16 round.

Olivier reached the last 16 where he lost 2-0 to Andrew Kelly of New Zealand. Kelly, subsequently advanced to the semifinals after he also beat Izzat Dzulkepl of Malaysia in the quarterfinals. He will now meet Michael Stepney of Scotland for a place in the final. 

The other semifinal is between Aron Sherriff of Australia and Martin Puckett of England. 

During the group stages, Olivier recorded two wins against Royden Aperau of the Cook Islands and Scottie Marzonie of the United States, but lost against Sherriff and Christopher Dagpin of the Philippines.

Earlier Olivier reached the quarterfinals of the mixed pairs competition with compatriot Petro Breedt, but their run came to an end with a defeat to Scotland. 

They won their group matches against Hungary, Ireland and Canada to reach the last eight, before losing to Scotland.
