NAMIBIAN small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can once again enter the EnterPrize competition, which recognises excellent business achievements in the sector every year.
Around N$440 000 has been put up by main sponsor Old Mutual and supporting sponsors the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), the Namibian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), Mutual and Federal and non-governmental organisation SMEs Compete.
Prizes come in the form of vouchers or in the NBC’s case advertising slots on national radio.
The NCCI will contribute memberships to the organisation for the competition winners.
Around 160 000 people are employed by about 30 000 SMEs operating in Namibia, and the sector makes up 8,7 per cent of the Namibian economy.
With total formal employment in Namibia standing at around 500 000, SMEs provide a significant amount of work for Namibians.
The competition was launched in 2007 when nearly 40 companies heeded the call for entries. This number swelled to 70 in 2008.
Businesses can enter in two categories.
The small business category includes businesses with up to 30 employees, while the medium business category is for businesses employing over 30 people.
The closing date for entries is August 24 and the prize-giving ceremony will take place on November 10.
