Okakarara gives loans for municipal bills

WINDHOEK – The Okakarara Town Council has embarked upon an alienation scheme aimed at assisting its residents, who owe the municipality, to reconcile their accounts.

The town council’s Public Relations Officer, Lesley Goraseb, told Nampa that the decision was taken to ease the debt situation, adding that an initial amount of N$290 000 has been budgeted. This new scheme has been introduced through the Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development and it is being introduced to all local authorities.Through the scheme, residents who are living in municipal houses and whose municipal accounts are in arrears, will be given a loan to settle their accounts and the residual will be used to renovate their houses, which Goraseb said are in a dilapidated state.”The houses are old and full of cracks. So what will happen is, the qualified resident will be given a loan, more than what he/she owes the town council, so that the remainder will be used to renovate the houses. They will then have to pay back this loan so that it can be used by others,” he said. The scheme will operate as a revolving fund – the repayments will not be made to the ministry but rather recycled to benefit other projects.Forty Okakarara residents have been registered and qualify for a loan.A timeframe of 10 to 20 years has been set to pay back the loan and the monthly instalment will be determined by the size of the loan.Meanwhile, Goraseb dismissed allegations that the town council has evicted some residents who owe the council thousands of dollars.NampaThis new scheme has been introduced through the Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development and it is being introduced to all local authorities.Through the scheme, residents who are living in municipal houses and whose municipal accounts are in arrears, will be given a loan to settle their accounts and the residual will be used to renovate their houses, which Goraseb said are in a dilapidated state.”The houses are old and full of cracks. So what will happen is, the qualified resident will be given a loan, more than what he/she owes the town council, so that the remainder will be used to renovate the houses. They will then have to pay back this loan so that it can be used by others,” he said. The scheme will operate as a revolving fund – the repayments will not be made to the ministry but rather recycled to benefit other projects.Forty Okakarara residents have been registered and qualify for a loan.A timeframe of 10 to 20 years has been set to pay back the loan and the monthly instalment will be determined by the size of the loan.Meanwhile, Goraseb dismissed allegations that the town council has evicted some residents who owe the council thousands of dollars.Nampa
