The Ohangwena education directorate says it aims to be the top-performing region in the country in the Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC) exams.
The region is currently ranked number four.
Ohangwena education director Isack Hamatwi said this during a recent meeting discussing last year’s results.
“We need to improve our ranking. We need to push most of the schools in the top 10 and top 20 best-performing schools in the country.
“We need to push at least one or two schools in the top-performing schools. Here at the regional level, let’s do our part and work hard to achieve better results,” he said.
Hamatwi urged education officials to avoid treating teachers poorly when they ask for help at their offices.
This could lead to underperformance in the classroom, he said.
“Our teachers are our most precious stones, we need to show them love and assist them with care. Do not give them bad attitudes.
“Treat them with love and respect, because if you give them bad attitudes, it ruins their mood and the bad attitudes spills over into the classroom. An angry teacher cannot perform to their best abilities,” he said.
Hamatwi said the directorate has over the years been battling the challenge of underperformance, ranking the region at the bottom of the performance charts.
“That challenge of underperformance is getting exhausted and we are about to overcome it,” he said.
