A Ministry of Environment and Tourism official at Walvis Bay, Andries Dausab, was last week arrested over five gemsbok carcasses, which he and three others allegedly poached.
The acting Regional Police Commander in Erongo, Chief Inspector Tobie Gerber, said a .223 rifle and bullet casings were also found in the bakkie in which the men were travelling.They appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on charges of illegal possession of game meat and transporting game meat without a licence. They were granted bail of N$1 000 each and the case was postponed for further investigation.Gerber told The Namibian that the men claimed to have received three animals from a farmer in the Karibib district. When the farmer – who allegedly does not have a hunting permit -was contacted, he told the Police he had given the men two gemsbok.’We counted five carcasses, so the figures just did not add up,’ Gerber said. ‘The farmer will also be under investigation.’adam@namibian.com.na
