NWR lodge to create 56 jobs

ABOUT 56 people will be employed at a new lodge that Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) is building in the Namib-Naukluft Park.

This was announced on Friday by NWR Managing Director Tobie Aupindi at the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the Sossus Dune Lodge, which will cost N$12 million. Aupindi said the lodge would be built in an eco-friendly manner, sitting on a wooden deck overlooking the Sesriem Canyon. The 25-bed lodge will have thatched roofs, sourced locally to support the local community. The buildings will be connected with paths to protect the sensitive ecosystem.Aupindi said the lodge was part of the NWR’s turnaround strategy to become profitable. An environmental impact assessment of the new lodge has already been approved by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. The Sossus Dune Lodge is the first new NWR tourism facility to be built since Independence.Construction is expected to take about eight months.Environment and Tourism Minister Willem Konjore had high praises for Aupindi. He said since his appointment in April, Aupindi had shown professionalism and dedication by steering the company in an entirely new direction.”This development breaks the mould of the existing NWR facilities,” Konjore said. The revamping process at NWR is planned to touch on critical units of the business such as infrastructure improvement, establishing new resorts and staff training. The re-organisation strategy, which is estimated to cost the company about N$115 million, was approved by the NWR Board of Directors in March.Aupindi said the lodge would be built in an eco-friendly manner, sitting on a wooden deck overlooking the Sesriem Canyon. The re-organisation strategy, which is estimated to cost the company about N$115 million, was approved by the NWR Board of Directors in March.
