NSSU to go solo

WINDHOEK – Interviews for the position of national co-ordinator for the Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) have been concluded and the successful candidate will start work on April 2.

That day will also mark the official handover of the administration of the NSSU back to its members. The Directorate of Sports in the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture has been handling the affairs of the NSSU since November 2004, when the former executive committee under president Tony Britz was fired due to mismanagement. The Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) was administering the union’s finances in the interim. The Directorate dissolved the NSSU executive committee and started afresh with the help of its members (teachers), drew up a new constitution and new structures that were adopted at Congress on November 11.The Deputy Director of school sports, Shivute Katamba, told Nampa that more than 40 people applied for the position of national co-ordinator of the NSSU’s Implementation Unit, but only seven were called for interviews last Thursday.Katamba said they have found the right person for the job but could not reveal the name, as the person has not been informed yet.The co-ordinator, on contract for three years, will report to the National Council and will implement all decisions taken by the National Council under direct supervision of the Directorate of Sports, said Katamba. The co-ordinator, assisted by the nine different code committees, will be responsible for regulating the codes, designing programmes, assessing regional activities and regulating the envisaged leagues. The idea behind the leagues is to cut out trials for national teams and save the NSSU a lot of money. The co-ordinator will also set up a proper communication channel within the NSSU and its stakeholders and run the union’s website that will be launched soon. The chairmanship of the National Council is currently held by Caprivi, after which it will rotate in an alphabetical order on a one-year basis. All sports activities of the NSSU have been running uninterrupted.NampaThe Directorate of Sports in the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture has been handling the affairs of the NSSU since November 2004, when the former executive committee under president Tony Britz was fired due to mismanagement. All sports activities of the NSSU have been running uninterrupted.Nampa
