Not The Father Of The Nation

Not The Father Of The Nation

ALLOW me to have some space in your popular newspaper to express my views about the law to be passed to bestow an official title on Nujoma. This law will be a big insult to the Namibian nation.

Nujoma is not the founder of this nation. The Namibian nation existed even before Jesus Christ was born.Nujoma was born on May 12, 1929, while my grandfather was born in 1890 and is older than him, which means that 40 years before Nujoma the Namibian nation was there.I doubt one can be called Founding Father of the Nation rather than Founding President while there were already ancestors who played a major role in the liberation struggle of this country before him.Does this mean we want to create a new history for one person or disregard and disrespect our forefathers in whose footsteps we should follow? Truly speaking, Nujoma is a Founding President of Namibia, but not Founding “Father” of the Namibian nation.I totally disagree with this law.If the Cabinet is saying Nujoma is the Founding “Father of the Nation”, what about Hosea Kutako, Mandume ya Ndemufayo, Nehale lya Mpingana, Toivo ya Toivo and others? I want to advise our Prime Minister Nahas Angula, who introduced the bill in the National Assembly, to withdraw such proposal with immediate effect: as it stands the bill will be a big insult not only to Nujoma himself, but also to the nation as a whole. The fact remains that we are Namibian citizens, and one can correctly interpret that we are one nation, which belongs to one country, but defiantly not children of Nujoma as we have our own fathers.Let me define the word “founding” – it means beginning, origin, establishment, creation, formation, making, etc.Now if Namibians are the establishment, creation, formation, making or manufacture of Nujoma, then who created him? If you visit various towns in our country, you can observe that the name of Nujoma is on streets, schools, soccer stadiums etc.Mr Nujoma every month receives a huge pension from the State. In 1998 the Parliament changed the constitution purposely to allow Mr Nujoma to run for the third term. All of this is being done just to the benefit of one person.Nujoma is just the father of Utoni Nujoma, and other biological children of his, but not the founding “father” of the nation. All of us have our own biological fathers.Ananias A Kaseven Via e-mailThe Namibian nation existed even before Jesus Christ was born.Nujoma was born on May 12, 1929, while my grandfather was born in 1890 and is older than him, which means that 40 years before Nujoma the Namibian nation was there.I doubt one can be called Founding Father of the Nation rather than Founding President while there were already ancestors who played a major role in the liberation struggle of this country before him.Does this mean we want to create a new history for one person or disregard and disrespect our forefathers in whose footsteps we should follow?
