No To Hero’s Burial For Anton

No To Hero’s Burial For Anton

I WOULD like to reply to Lisa whose letter asked what the role of Anton Lubowski was: In my understanding, Anton Lubowski was an advocate of the Supreme Court in Windhoek, who while defending political prisoners became involved with unions, particularly the NUNW.

He officially joined Swapo in 1984, and was indeed the first white person to do so. Although he held no official Party position, he used to give public statements on behalf of Swapo, and initiated NUNW projects. In my recommendation it’s not possible to bury Anton at Heroes’ Acre, as he held no official position in the Party, and he was just like any other Swapo member who helped Namibia gain Independence. If we have to place him at the Acre, then all the others who died fighting for Namibia would be there and it would become overcrowded.Of course he was regarded as a hero, and that applies to all the people who fought for this country, but it’s impossible to bury everyone at the Acre.Mweulinale Via e-mail Note: Anton wasn’t the first ‘white’ member of Swapo. He was first to go public with his membership though.Your letter does raise the thorny question as to whether Swapo Party membership is a requirement to be buried at Heroes’ Acre. Also if you acknowledge Anton as a hero, but at the same time say that he and others can’t be buried there, what’s the point of a Heroes’ Acre at all?Although he held no official Party position, he used to give public statements on behalf of Swapo, and initiated NUNW projects. In my recommendation it’s not possible to bury Anton at Heroes’ Acre, as he held no official position in the Party, and he was just like any other Swapo member who helped Namibia gain Independence. If we have to place him at the Acre, then all the others who died fighting for Namibia would be there and it would become overcrowded.Of course he was regarded as a hero, and that applies to all the people who fought for this country, but it’s impossible to bury everyone at the Acre.
