No NPL Cup for Christmas

No NPL Cup for Christmas

THE Namibia Premier League’s (NPL) envisaged plans to have a Cup competition this month have not materialised.

League CEO Mathew Haikali said on Monday that negotiations with the would-be sponsors of the knockout competition have not been concluded and thus the tournament may only take place early next year. Precious stone trader NU Diamonds Manufacturing (PTY) Ltd is expected to bankroll the tournament. Despite the setback, Haikali is adamant that the competition, which is exclusive to premier division teams only, will still happen, albeit belatedly. ‘We initially wanted to have the competition in December but the negotiations are still ongoing,’ said Haikali. ‘Now we are looking at having it in January.’Haikali added that a second Cup competition for the NPL, also sponsored by Nu Diamonds, is earmarked for March next year. He said the purpose of the tournaments was to provide more game time for domestic-based footballers, who besides playing in the MTC premiership only have the Leo NFA Cup to look forward to.sheefeni@namibian.com.na
