Nigeria asks for banking licence

The Federal Government of Nigeria has appealed to the Namibian government to help its Platinum-Habib Bank get an operational licence to move into Namibia.

Ambassador Bagudu Hirse, Nigeria’s minister of state for foreign affairs, made the appeal on a visit to President Hifikepunye Pohamba, reports Nigeria’s This Day. This follows the conclusions reached at the third joint commission session between Nigeria and Namibia in July this year. The Nigerian daily reports that Hirse informed Pohamba that the bank would lead other banks in Nigeria and Namibia in financing a refinery plant in Walvis Bay.”The speedy granting of the operational licence to Platinum-Habib Bank in Namibia would hasten the refinery project, as the committee set up could not function without necessary funds, which are expected to be provided by the bank and other banks,” Hirse was quoted as saying in This Day.Pohamba, in his response, is reported to have said that he was delighted with the outcome of the third joint commission session and particularly on “the proposal for the establishment of a refinery plant in Namibia, which when completed would not only supply its products to Namibia, but to Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana and South Africa”.This follows the conclusions reached at the third joint commission session between Nigeria and Namibia in July this year. The Nigerian daily reports that Hirse informed Pohamba that the bank would lead other banks in Nigeria and Namibia in financing a refinery plant in Walvis Bay.”The speedy granting of the operational licence to Platinum-Habib Bank in Namibia would hasten the refinery project, as the committee set up could not function without necessary funds, which are expected to be provided by the bank and other banks,” Hirse was quoted as saying in This Day.Pohamba, in his response, is reported to have said that he was delighted with the outcome of the third joint commission session and particularly on “the proposal for the establishment of a refinery plant in Namibia, which when completed would not only supply its products to Namibia, but to Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana and South Africa”.
