New town in the making

RUNDU – The Nkurenkuru settlement, 145 kilometres west of Rundu in the Kavango Region, will be developed into a town within the next three years, Regional and Local Government and Housing Permanent Secretary Erastus Negonga said here yesterday.

Negonga made the announcement when he addressed members of the Kavango Regional Council. He added that his Ministry was doing its best to proclaim Nkurenkuru as the second town in the region.Negonga said apart from the residential area being upgraded, his Ministry planned to speed up the upgrading of the business sites as the second phase of the development programme.Nkurenkuru, he added, was a gateway to the Ohangwena Region and also linked Namibia with neighbouring Angola via the Katwitwi Border Post. The upgrading of Nkurenkuru to town status would also create jobs for local people since many businesses would open up in the area. The Permanent Secretary said that with the tarring of the Rundu-Nkurenkuru gravel road as part of the Trans Caprivi Highway leading to the Cape Fria Harbour, the Ministry needed to speed up developments at Nkurenkuru.- NampaHe added that his Ministry was doing its best to proclaim Nkurenkuru as the second town in the region.Negonga said apart from the residential area being upgraded, his Ministry planned to speed up the upgrading of the business sites as the second phase of the development programme.Nkurenkuru, he added, was a gateway to the Ohangwena Region and also linked Namibia with neighbouring Angola via the Katwitwi Border Post. The upgrading of Nkurenkuru to town status would also create jobs for local people since many businesses would open up in the area. The Permanent Secretary said that with the tarring of the Rundu-Nkurenkuru gravel road as part of the Trans Caprivi Highway leading to the Cape Fria Harbour, the Ministry needed to speed up developments at Nkurenkuru.- Nampa
