OPUWO – Individuals who buy livestock without notifying farmers’ unions will not receive permits to move their animals.
Vice President of the Ngatuuane Farmers Union in Kunene North, Ben Kapi, said the decision to issue permits to individual buyers was taken towards the end of last year as a measure to prevent stock theft. “The traditional leaders, together with the farmers’ unions and the veterinary office, agreed to only issue livestock permits to move livestock at auctions organised by the farmers union,” said Kapi.He added that this method would not only minimise livestock theft but would improve livestock prices in the region.”Giving permits to move livestock and to people who buy cattle and goats at auctions organised by the union will promote competition amongst buyers and will lead to the improvement of prices,” Kapi pointed out.He told Nampa that headmen would continue to issue application forms to people who wanted to buy and move livestock within the Kunene North area. But people who want to move livestock to other regions would not be granted permits unless the animals were bought at an auction organised by the Ngatuuane Farmers Union.- Nampa”The traditional leaders, together with the farmers’ unions and the veterinary office, agreed to only issue livestock permits to move livestock at auctions organised by the farmers union,” said Kapi.He added that this method would not only minimise livestock theft but would improve livestock prices in the region.”Giving permits to move livestock and to people who buy cattle and goats at auctions organised by the union will promote competition amongst buyers and will lead to the improvement of prices,” Kapi pointed out.He told Nampa that headmen would continue to issue application forms to people who wanted to buy and move livestock within the Kunene North area. But people who want to move livestock to other regions would not be granted permits unless the animals were bought at an auction organised by the Ngatuuane Farmers Union.- Nampa
