New date for Standard Bank Super Cup

The much-anticipated Standard Bank Super Cup has been moved to 27 September at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, featuring Namibia Premier League (NPL) champions Black Africa and a yet to be determined club.

This was decided at a meeting held between the Namibia Football Association (NFA) and the title sponsors of the Cup, Standard Bank Namibia on Tuesday morning.

The match was initially scheduled for 30 August at 16h00 between Black Africa and rivals African Stars but due to the ongoing suspension appeal case involving Stars, the match has been postponed.

The Super Cup is to be contested by the league winners and the Bidvest Namibia Cup winners, but as it stands the status of Stars as league members is under scrutiny. They were suspended by the NPL for two seasons for allegedly bringing the game of football into disrepute after they took the NPL and NFA to court regarding their much-talked about eight-minutes replay against Orlando Pirates in the league.

The Standard Bank Namibia Cup is a once-off match where the winners will be N$500 000 richer and the runners-up N$200 000 and as expected there will be a lot of marketing and promotions in the build-up for the match.

“We have to allow the due process to take place and after the verdict of the appeal, we will then possibly have enough time to make sure we market the game well as it should be. We remain confident that this match will take place on 27 September with two worthy clubs contesting the cup and producing a spectacle of a game,” said Barry Rukoro of the NFA in announcing the new date.

Regarding Stars’ suspension, the NFA Appeals Committee on Saturday, 16 August 2014 heard arguments from lawyer Patrick Kauta for African Stars, Johan du Plessis representing Sydney Martin and Clint Dauti and lawyer Slysken Makando on behalf of the Namibia Premier League (NPL). The verdict is expected to be delivered on Wednesday, 27 August. – nfa.org.na
