THE Swakopmund Municipal Council built and donated a classroom for the Vrede Rede Primary School in Mondesa, Swakopmund.
Classroom space in Erongo, especially in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, is very scarce due to a constant influx of people moving to the towns in hopes of finding jobs and a better life for themselves and their families. The challenge this brings to schools, is that space has to be found for the learners, especially those starting out in Grade-1.The new classroom will be able to accommodate 35 learners, and will specifically be used for Grade-6 learners in the school that has about 700 children.Swakopmund Mayor, Rosina //Hoabes said that it was the municipal council’s responsibility to ensure the needs of the community are met, and that giving a classroom was investing in the future of the children. She challenged other institutions and businesses to do likewise, saying that it was not just the job of the central Government to build schools and classes.’They wanted a class for a computer centre, but decided rather to make more space for their children. I challenge other institutions to help with a class that Vrede Rede can eventually use to turn into a computer centre,’ said //Hoabes.Deputy Director of Education, Mark Jacobs, said that the Ministry of Education cannot keep up with the shortage of space for new learners and to ensure that every child does find a place in school.’Shortages keep skyrocketing, and it’s gestures like this that will help us to ensure that our children receive the education they deserve,’ he said.
