POWER was switched on at the proposed site of the Ohorongo cement company on Farm Sargberg near Otavi on April 23.
Since the beginning of 2009, Ohorongo Cement had been using diesel generators to supply electricity to its camp and building site on the farm.
The temporary electricity supply provided by NamPower will only be used during the cement plant’s construction, which will last until the end of 2010.
The next electricity supply milestone will be at the end of 2010, when NamPower will turn on the main power supply for the start of operations at the cement factory.
Hans-Wilhelm Schütte, the General Manager of Ohorongo Cement, said the power supply ‘is a key milestone for Ohorongo Cement in the construction of Namibia’s first cement plant’.
NamPower’s Manager for Marketing and Corporate Communication, John Kaimu, said: ‘As the custodian of bulk electricity supply we are delighted to be associated with electricity-intensive ventures such as this which have positive benefits on the socio-economic development of Namibia’.
The sub-station will supply electricity with a voltage level of 11 000 and a capacity of 4 000 kVA to the site.
