Namport to expand Walvis container terminal

AS part of its expansion programme, the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) wants to expand its container terminal facilities.
Independent studies indicate that the best way to expand the container terminal is to construct a new facility on reclaimed land within the port limits.

Namport proposes the construction of a new terminal opposite the existing berths of the commercial port on reclaimed land, connected by an access causeway at the southern end, near the Walvis Bay Yacht Club area. The terminal area will encompass about 1,2 million square metres. Proposals have been made for the increase of the length, width, and depth of the port entrance channel and turning basin, and then using the dredged material for land reclamation as far as possible. The public can assist in identifying concerns and issues of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), by attending a public meeting on Thursday, June 11 at Walvis Bay.
