Namibians trust elections – survey

Most Namibians prefer elections as the main way to select their leaders.

Some 74% of them support this democratic process.

This is according to a recent Afrobarometer survey.

The survey revealed high levels of perceived freedom among citizens to join political organisations and vote without feeling pressured.

“Overwhelming majorities report that they feel ‘somewhat free’ or ‘completely free’ to join any political organisation (87%) and to choose whom to vote for without feeling pressured,” the report states.

According to the findings, more than seven out of 10 Namibians participated in the last national election in 2019.

While the majority viewed elections as largely free and fair, concerns linger regarding political intimidation or violence during the campaign period, with approximately three in 10 respondents admitting to experiencing some level of fear.

The report says urban residents, particularly those with no formal education, and women were slightly less likely to feel completely free to engage in political activities.

Moreover, young people were notably less inclined to have participated in the previous election.
