Namibia conservancies to cede earnings to community development

CONSERVANCIES in Namibia will have to cede 50% of their earnings to community development, according to the country’s environment minister.

Deputy minister of environment Bernadette Jagger on Sunday said the move is meant to help poor communities located inside Namibian conservation sites benefit from their natural resources.

She added that the ministry’s move to promote sustainable exploitation of Namibia’s natural resources by locals is a step in the right direction of social development.

A legal framework that sees “earnings from hunting permits be used to benefit societies” will also be introduced, she said.
