Muti-murder accused arrested for coffin theft

RUNDU – The Police in the Kavango Region on Thursday arrested a man at Popa village, some 210 kilometres east of Rundu, for allegedly stealing a used coffin.

According to the Police, the suspect last week dug up the coffin of Mupika Mupondo, who was buried on August 20. Mupondo’s family identified the coffin found in the suspect’s hut as the one they had buried their elderly relative in.The suspect is to appear in court this week.Meanwhile, a medical doctor who inspected Mupondo’s body before it was reburied told the Police that the right foot had been cut off.Relatives said the body had been buried intact and the foot must have been removed by whoever had dug up the coffin.Kavango Regional Governor John Thighuru, who is also a resident of Popa village, told Nampa that the suspect was one of the two men acquitted earlier this year on charges of having murdered their grandmother in 2002.In October 2002, residents of Popa village were shocked when children discovered two severed arms hanging from a tree next to the road.It was later learned that the arms belonged to a missing elderly woman identified as Thihawa Thihako. The rest of her body were found in a mahangu field where she had been murdered.- NampaMupondo’s family identified the coffin found in the suspect’s hut as the one they had buried their elderly relative in.The suspect is to appear in court this week.Meanwhile, a medical doctor who inspected Mupondo’s body before it was reburied told the Police that the right foot had been cut off.Relatives said the body had been buried intact and the foot must have been removed by whoever had dug up the coffin.Kavango Regional Governor John Thighuru, who is also a resident of Popa village, told Nampa that the suspect was one of the two men acquitted earlier this year on charges of having murdered their grandmother in 2002.In October 2002, residents of Popa village were shocked when children discovered two severed arms hanging from a tree next to the road.It was later learned that the arms belonged to a missing elderly woman identified as Thihawa Thihako. The rest of her body were found in a mahangu field where she had been murdered.- Nampa
