POLICE officers investigating the murder of an Okahandja poultry farmer six weeks ago are looking for two more suspects after arresting two men in connection with the crime over the weekend – but then losing one to an apparent suicide in the Okahandja Police cells on Monday.
Having been arrested on Sunday in connection with the shooting incident that claimed the life of Gerd Wentscher (47) at his poultry farm on the outskirts of Okahandja on June 9, 39-year-old Otjiwarongo resident David Nambabi was locked up in a Police holding cell at Okahandja the next morning.Nambabi however hanged himself in the cell on Monday, a Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Angula Amulungu, said yesterday. He said Nambabi apparently used a piece of his trousers to hang himself with.Nambabi is suspected of having been an accomplice to the gang responsible for the murder of Wentscher, Amulungu added. He said it appears that Nambabi had transported the suspected killers to the plot where Wentscher was shot dead.It was reported shortly after Wentscher’s death that three persons had apparently been involved in the attack in which he was killed.Nambabi’s death meant that another suspect who was also arrested over the weekend in connection with the killing, Samuel Nambinga Kambonde, appeared alone in the dock in the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.Kambonde (30) appeared before Magistrate Jabulani Ncube on a charge of murder. He was arrested at Tsumeb on Sunday, Amulungu said.On the request of Public Prosecutor Felistas Shikerete, the case against Kambonde was postponed to September 3 for further investigations to be carried out. Kambonde is being kept in custody in the meantime.
