WINDHOEK motorists can expect to begin making use of part of the new extension to Robert Mugabe Avenue before the end of the year.
The construction, which will cost the city N$115 million to complete, is aimed at reducing congestion between the city centre and the Northern Industrial Area, Katutura and Khomasdal. It is expected that the section of road between Kenya House to the intersection with Nelson Mandela Avenue will be finished by the end of the year. The City of Windhoek said this week that while the project was on schedule overall, there had been delays on the road behind the Government Office Park because underground services had to be relocated.Layer works have not begun on this section of road and surfacing of the northbound carriageway is scheduled to start within the the next few weeks and to be open for traffic by December.Work has also begun on the new bridge over the railway line, adjacent to the Simon de Wit Bridge, which will lead northbound traffic from Robert Mugabe Avenue to Dortmund Street. This section will only be opened to traffic once the project is completed at the end of next year.At present medium enterprise contractors are working on portions of the road under the supervision of the main contractor LTA Grinaker. The public can contact the project liaison committee headed by Dirk Eberle on 061-236251 with any questions related to environmental or social issues stemming from the construction work.It is expected that the section of road between Kenya House to the intersection with Nelson Mandela Avenue will be finished by the end of the year. The public can contact the project liaison committee headed by Dirk Eberle on 061-236251 with any questions related to environmental or social issues stemming from the construction work.
