MORE than 8 500 fish at the Mpungu fish farm in the Kavango Region are ready to be harvested, according to a Fisheries Assistant Biologist in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.
Harold Khaebeb told Nampa last week that they had restocked the ponds at the farm after renovations. Khaebeb said their target is to harvest about three tonnes of fish in April. The fish farm was renovated in the past three months and a new irrigation system and two water pump stations for N$3 million were installed. The Mpungu fish farm currently has four breeding and production ponds and a nursery, and engages 26 workers.Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Dr Abraham Iyambo, who visited the fish farm recently, expressed satisfaction with developments there.’The fish grown at the Mpungu farm are of an acceptable weight and size,’ the Minister told the workers. He called on them to use the land productively and to diversify their farming by growing fruit and vegetables such as cassava, beans, potatoes and onions. Iyambo thanked National Youth Service (NYS) members attached to the fish farm for their discipline and work ethics, saying that if it was not for them, the farm could have collapsed. Before his visit to the Mpungu fish farm 140 km west of Rundu, Iyambo paid a visit to the Kamutjonga Inland Fishing Institute (KIFI) near Divundu and the Karovo fish farm east of Rundu in the Mukwe Constituency.- Nampa
