THE average Namibian using a cellphone to browse the Internet views 263 Web pages per month, Opera’s latest issue of State of the Mobile Web reports.
Page-view growth has shot up by a staggering 289,6 per cent since last April, while users have increased by 91,3 per cent.The most popular website is Facebook, followed by Google and Yahoo.The rest of Namibia’s top 10 list is made up of bbc.co.uk, my.opera.com, wikipedia.org, waptrick.com, cnn.com, gamejump.com and gmail.com.Besides Namibia, Opera looked at mobile trends in South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Libya, Zambia, Tanzania, Cote d’Ivoire, Mozambique, Ghana and Gabon in their April report. These countries are the top 12 countries using Opera Mini, a free mobile Web browser.Overall page views in these countries increased by 422 per cent from April 2008 to April 2009. Unique users grew by 169 per cent during the same period, while overall data transferred increased by 348 per cent.Google is the most popular or second most popular site in most of Africa, only surpassed by Facebook in a few instances. The trio of Google, Yahoo and Facebook take the top three spots, in various orders, in eight out of the 12 countries. Wikipedia is also strong, making the top 10 list in 10 out of the top 12 countries.Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets are dominant in Africa, but Samsung is a significant exception, boasting the most popular phone used by Opera Mini users in South Africa, as well as Zambia, Namibia and Gabon.Namibia’s ten favourite handsets in April were the Samsung E250, Samsung D900i, Nokia 6300, Sony Ericsson K800i, Nokia5000d, Nokia N70, Motorola L7, Sony Ericsson K750i, Nokia N73 and Sony Ericsson K810i.jo-mare@namibian.com.na
