CAPE TOWN – Cape Town disaster management services are gearing up for more heavy rain expected to hit the already flood-ravaged city next week.

Disaster management spokesperson, Johan Minnie, said rain was expected to stop for three days after yesterday. However, relief services were standing by as more rain was expected on Wednesday, he said.About 30 000 people had been affected, with varying degrees of severity, by the floods in Cape Town. The floods have affected the most people ever, said Minnie. He said this could be due to the increase of the city’s population, particularly those settling on land not developed with intrastate, like on flat plains or near vleis. The most recent incident was at Vygieskraal canal in Athlone.Minnie said the canal had burst its banks at 03h00 on Sunday, causing damage to houses nearby. The Crossroads-Phillipi area was the most affected of the 49 informal areas that were flooded on Saturday night.About 8 000 properties had been affected by the floods. One school, Klipfontein Mission School in Phillipi, was shut on Friday. Many roads in the city were also closed.Minnie said emergency shelters had been set up, mainly in community halls.Relief was being provided by the city disaster management, social services and five non-governmental organisations including the Salvation Army, Red Cross and Mustadafin Foundation. These organisations were providing people with blankets, meals and food parcels, said Minnie.Nampa-SapaHowever, relief services were standing by as more rain was expected on Wednesday, he said.About 30 000 people had been affected, with varying degrees of severity, by the floods in Cape Town. These organisations were providing people with blankets, meals and food parcels, said Minnie.Nampa-Sapa
