More Equal Than Others?

More Equal Than Others?

I AM Immanuel Haihambo, a Namibian student in Cuba.

I want to hear from the Ministry of Education what the different is between students who are studying engineering and those doing medicine. The ministry increased the allowance for medical students but not for us. What kind of equality is that? To me this means that we are all not equal and it means that medicine is much more important in our country. In Cuba, the situation is tough for everyone, but I understand that medical students are living better than us, because they have better accommodation and better food. They don’t even need to travel when they go for practical training because hospitals are near their university, but we need to travel more than 120km.Again the ministry provides for them (medicine students) flight tickets and at the same time they increased their allowances with the reason that they need practical training back home, while we know that when it comes to medicine Cuba is the best in the world. What kind of practical training are they going to do?What about us who really need that? Do they think that this condition will motivate us to study? They may remember that we are all the future of the country and not only medical students. Just think about it: students from the same country, no one can afford to pay education or anything else but some get more than others (US$4 200 and US$3800). What is that? The other thing is that the permanent secretary was here this year, and told us he came to hear our problems. We talked to him face to face. He even told us how much we are supposed to be paid and in which currency. Was he here just to spend government money for nothing or what? Now whom are we going to blame and to believe if even those who are at the top destroy our hearts. I request the ministry or minister himself to respond me immediately.Immanuel HaihamboCuba
