Missing mother arrested

A 21-year old woman who allegedly left her baby in the arms of a stranger more than two months ago has been arrested.

The Namibian reported in July that Police and medical staff at the Oshikuku clinic in the Omusati Region were trying to trace Ndahekelekwa Ndimulunde, the mother of the then three-month-old girl. According to the woman with whom the baby was left, she met Ndimulunde and her daughter in a taxi on the way to the town Onandjaba. After introducing themselves to one another, the two women then visited a number of shops at the town together.Towards the end of their shopping trip, Ndimulunde asked her new acquaintance to take care of the baby for a few minutes while she quickly stepped into another shop. She then disappeared, leaving the other woman to figure out what to do with her daughter. After failing to track down the child’s mother, she decided to take her to the Police, who in turn took her to the Oshikuku clinic.Police finally caught up with Ndimulunde last Thursday, arresting her at her home in the Omatwadiva village of the Omusati Region’s Okalongo constituency.Police said the community’s assistance after media reports on the matter were key in tracing the woman.Ndimulunde first provided false information to the police but eventually admitted to being the mother of the baby left with a stranger on July 3.She made a first appearance in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court last Friday, where the case against her was postponed until January 23 for further Police investigation. She was granted bail of N$400.The child has since been moved to an orphanage at the Oshakati State Hospital.According to the woman with whom the baby was left, she met Ndimulunde and her daughter in a taxi on the way to the town Onandjaba.
