Ministry seeks flood info

WINDHOEK’S flood lines are being investigated by the hydrology division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Rural Development.

The aim is to determine the frequency of floods and flood lines as they occur in natural environments, the Ministry said in a statement. This information is used by the City of Windhoek for building requirements within the capital, said Deputy Director of Hydrology Guido van Langenhove.Senior Hydrologist Pauline Shikongo has called on the public to present the division with any information on last week’s heavy rainfalls, which saw some rivers burst their banks.”We are looking for rainfall measurements and flood observations.People should let us know where it flooded and how much,” Shikongo said when approached for comment by The Namibian yesterday.”From the damage the flood caused, it seems like it was bigger than previous floods. But one must also remember that previously, Windhoek didn’t have the kind of infrastructure it has today”.Information will be analysed and “be used to confirm the statistical interval at which these floods can be expected”.The survey is also conducted to estimate the flood peaks expected in Windhoek.* Anybody with relevant rainfall measurements should contact: – Pauline Shikongo, Senior Hydrologist, at 208 7191 or mail to: ShikongoP@mawrd.gov.na – Ernst Mbangula, Hydrologist, at 208 7258 or mail to: MbangulaW@mawrd.gov.naThis information is used by the City of Windhoek for building requirements within the capital, said Deputy Director of Hydrology Guido van Langenhove.
