AN ISRAELI mining company boss with business interests in Namibia, Boris Bannai, spent the past weekend in Police custody after being arrested as a result of a request for his extradition to Poland.

The mining company owner was nabbed on Friday on an international arrest warrant, a Police spokesperson, Inspector Kauna Shikwambi, confirmed yesterday. The 54-year-old Bannai is wanted in Poland in connection with alleged fraud and money laundering, Shikwambi said.According to her, he was arrested at about 22h00 at the Hilton Hotel in Windhoek.Shikwambi said Bannai’s arrest was a joint operation between the Namibian Police and Interpol. The Israeli national is being detained at Windhoek Central Prison. He is expected to lodge a formal bail application before a Windhoek magistrate today.Chief Inspector Immanuel Sam, head of Interpol’s National Central Bureau in Namibia, yesterday also confirmed the arrest.Sam said although it was known ‘for quite some time’ that Bannai finds himself in Namibia, the documentation for his arrest was only finalised at the start of March.According to another source the arrest follows on a request for his extradition to Poland which the Polish government has sent to its Namibian counterpart. The charges on which he is wanted in Poland are apparently counts of fraud, money laundering and acting to the detriment of a company.
