Mercedes Von Cloete first transgender MC at Miss Namibia

Transgender activist Mercedes von Cloete made history as the first transgender MC at the Miss Namibia (MN) preliminary pageant on Saturday evening.
Von Cloete said this was testimony that a new chapter was possible for Namibia.

“I can confidently say that we are in an era where Namibia turns a new chapter and page. I had always known that this was possible because I love and know my country. It matters that everyone in this country is represented,” Von Cloete said.
The platform has reignited a sense of passion as MCing on the MN stage has been on her list of goals for many years, Von Cloete said.

“Since I watched Miss Namibia for the first time, I knew this is where I wanted to be. It is so incredible that the public has welcomed me onboard. It is incredible that we can finally look past our shells and other layers that we have because we have so many,” Von Cloete said.
Von Cloete said the audition process was challenging, with many turning up.

“Honestly, I thought I would not make it. The talent was so great. Through this experience I have learned so much. I also broadened my knowledge about the industry. For example, before I did not know what it means to go live. This is such a good feeling, and I am excited to see what this new chapter has in store for all of us.”
Miss Namibia CEO Umbi Karuaihe-Upi said Von Cloete was selected by a judging team.

“I trust them. We made the best choice. My team are professionals and I support them. It is important that people express themselves as who they are. Everyone has the right to express themselves the way they want to,” she said.

“In Mercedes, the team saw talent as something that we needed,” Karuaihe-Upi said.
